At the end of July, while walking through the cafeteria at work, Gail stopped by a table set up to promote the “the summer challenge.” After learning the details of the weight management program, she decided to commit. Her incentive was the chance to win some great prizes; the challenge was to exercise ten times during the month of August. Gail recalled, "I hadn’t exercised to any extent in years, but I knew it was time for me to start losing weight and get myself healthy."
And so it began, on July 29, 2003, Gail endured her first exercise session. She was very tired after it was over, but felt that she had accomplished a big step. "I actually went to the gym three times a week after that and have continued to do so-most weeks."
A week later she met with a nutritionist to start her Healthy Steps weight loss journey. "I was very nervous knowing that I had failed on every other weight loss program and believe me, I had tried them ALL!" The nutritionist explained the importance of balancing food and keeping a journal. Gail was advised to record EVERYTHING she consumed and how much she exercised.
After completing Round 1 (12 weeks) of Healthy Steps, Gail lost a total of 20 pounds. Gail says, "It was a slow process but well worth it. One major benefit is that I can walk from the parking lot at work to my desk without losing my breath. I’m not perfect all the time, but I have had a steady weight loss of one to two pounds per week. The program has taught me how and when to eat. I’d like to lose 100 more pounds and I plan to stick with the program until I do so. Honestly, I would not have been able to do this if it hadn’t been for the support and encouragement of the nutritionists and exercise physiologists at the Wellness Center. They were responsible for getting me started in the first place and were always smiling when I met with them. My thanks to all of them-I couldn’t have done it without them!"
